Its blue façade with the 1828 inscription stands right on the main square, in view from the park.
About the place
The first wing was built in 1826–1827 with Bishop Samuil Vulcan's own money, and the founding deed of the school is dated 6 October 1828. On the façade you can read the year MDCCCXXVIII and the Latin inscription 'Educationi iuventutis huius provinciae'. The building was extended in 1834–1835, 1887–1888, 1899–1900 and 1939–1941.
Until 1851 teaching was in Latin, then in Romanian, with periods when German and Hungarian were imposed. Alumni include the academicians Marius Sala and Mircea Flonta. It is still a working high school, so you see it from outside.
Good to know
- Look at the building from the square: the inscription and the year 1828 are under the cornice.
- Do not enter the courtyard during lessons; it is a working school.
- Combine it with the museum and the Roman Catholic church, all on the same square.
